So what is a paint horse?* The history of the American Paint Horse has been woven into a blanket of songs, stories and artwork. Paint Horses were included in cowboy ballads sung under the stars. Many Native American tribes revered the Paint Horse, believing it to possess magical powers that would protect the warrior upon its back during battle. The Sioux have handed down a song from generation to generation about a Paint Horse who returned from the battle of the Little Bighorn. The Pawnee and Arikana tribes have also honored a spotted horse returning from battle in a war-dance song. One Cheyenne legend ties the golden eagle to black and white horses and explains the special bond Native Americans feel with them.
